Basics of Baseball

April 7, 2015

The 2015 season of Major League Baseball kicked off this past Sunday, and if all you know about the game is that some hottie named Derek Jeter plays, or used to play, or is somehow involved, then A) you're not alone because I know nothing about America's so-called favorite pastime, and B) you might want to brush up on a few basic baseball terms in case it comes up in conversation between now and the MLB season end in October (or in case your husband's job gives him free tickets, which has happened to us before; I was pregnant at the time and was only interested in the concessions).

Bases drunk: another term for bases loaded, which means there's a player on first, second, and third bases, and a hitter is up at bat (also bases juiced, bases full, bases chucked, and bases jammed)

Base hit: the batter hits the ball and makes it to first base safely
Double: the batter hits the ball and makes it to second base safely
Grand slam: when the batter hits a home run with the bases loaded, resulting in four runs for the team (also called a salami)
Home run: the batter hits the ball, usually over the fence, and makes it all the way around the bases and back to home plate (also park or parked, as in "he hit it outta the park")
Inning: a period of play in the game in which each team has an opportunity to bat (the visiting team bats during the first half of the inning, called the top, and the home team bats during the bottom half); there are nine innings in a game
Slugger: a batter who commonly hits the ball with a lot of power
Steal: when a player on one of the bases successfully advances to the next base while the pitcher it throwing the ball to home plate for the batter
Strike: when a batter swings but misses, or doesn't swing at a ball that's within the strike zone (a strikeout pitcher is known for striking out players a lot)
Triple: the batter makes it all the way to third base
