15 Ways to Make Spring Even More Fabulous

March 21, 2017

Even though I love winter I couldn't be more excited about the arrival of spring. All around the city, trees are bursting with colorful blossoms and the weather has started to warm up, despite the showers we're expecting this week. I can't wait to start wearing maxi dresses and putting my little ones in playful skirt sets, and my husband has already made plans to barbecue soon. There is so much to look forward to this season that I've put together a list to help make it an amazing spring.

1. Treat yourself to a bouquet fresh flowers to brighten up your home or office.

2. Have a picnic. I've shared some brilliant picnic ideas here, here, and here

3. Put together a basket of Peeps, Cadbury Eggs, and other Easter candy and take it down to your local fire house or police station.

4. Wear floral prints.

5. Take advantage of the season's fresh produce and get creative in the kitchen.

6. Host a spring dinner party. These beautiful tablescapes are major goals.

7. Buy a cute new umbrella so you can enjoy the springtime showers without getting soaked.

8. Try a new fragrance.

9. Burn a gorgeously scented candle that evokes everything wonderful about the season. Here are my favorite scented candles for spring

10. Open all the windows in your house and let the cool, spring breeze flow through.

11. Channel your inner bohemian and wear a flower in your hair.

12. Do a little spring cleaning and freshen up your space

13. Visit a botanical garden.

14. Invite your pals over for girls' night and serve one of these pretty spring cocktails

15. Head to your favorite makeup counter to find the perfect pink lipstick to match your skintone.

10 Just For Fun Resolutions for a Happy New Year

December 29, 2016

The beginning of a new year is when people are most inspired to make significant changes in their lives--losing weight and getting shape, getting out of debt, quitting their job to pursue their dream, etc; it's as if the world is magically transformed when the clock strikes twelve on January 1, and all the things that seemed impossible before are suddenly ours for the taking. But all too often those great big hopes become smaller and smaller, and our resolutions become afterthoughts. Instead of putting all that pressure on yourself, here is a list of just-for-fun resolutions that may not be entirely life changing, but will offer some enjoyment and adventure in 2017. Do them, or don't--no biggie either way.

1. Start learning a new language.
2. Try a type of cuisine you've never eaten.
3. Create your own masterpiece at a local Paint Nites event.
4. Make a list of books you've been wanting to read.
5. Actually read at least one of the above books (this may not seem possible if you have children, but even if you only read a few pages a day you'll feel like you're winning).
6. Find a fun class to take, such as sushi making, photography, or lyrical jazz dance.
7. Celebrate your birthday like a kid--get excited about it, tell everyone you happen to pass on the street that it's your birthday,  wear a tiara, blow out your candles, and, instead of worrying about the calories in the cake, just eat a slice.
8. Cook more of your favorite recipes, even the ones that are excruciatingly time consuming (that's what weekends are for).
9. Use the power of the interwebs to track down an old friend you haven't seen in a long time.
10. Buy yourself a gorgeous pair of shoes that are outside of your budget (even if that means skipping a few happy hours).

Summer Bucket List

June 22, 2016

We're moving in a couple of weeks, which is a big deal and a lot of work, but also incredibly exciting.  And even though I'd love to stay holed up all season working on the house, I've got two little ones and a husband who will want to venture out at some point. Besides painting and decorating and creating a beautiful space for my family to call home, here are a few things I'd like to tick off of my bucket list this summer.

1. Have friends over for a crab boil.

2. Explore our new neighborhood and try as many local restaurants as possible.
3. Plan a proper family photo shoot. (We haven't had a professional shoot in years, and sadly, have no portraits with my youngest.)
4. Take my daughters horseback riding and to ride the train at Griffith Park.
5. Have more picnics with my little girls.
6. Take my six-year old up to the Hollywood sign. We had an awesome view of it from our place in L.A. when she was little and she was obsessed with it.
7. Wake up extra early to make cinnamon rolls and coffee for a sunrise breakfast on the beach with my family.
8. Take my husband wine tasting (he's never been).
9. Track down a full set of vintage champagne coupes (for serving pretty summer cocktails).
10. Let my girls get messy and creative at Duff's Cake Mix.

Glamping 101: Essentials for a Girly-Glam Camping Trip

June 20, 2016

I am, by no means, an outdoorsy person, and with just a few exceptions (e.g. poolside under a canopy, or relaxing in the shade of a palm tree on the beach) I much prefer indoor activities. The last time I went camping I was pregnant with my 6-year old and ended up sleeping at a hotel; before that, I was a kid at my family's annual Yosemite camping trip, and I always opted to sleep in our minivan rather than the tent. But since then, camping has gone full-on glamorous, from tents with chandeliers and luxe bedding to gourmet s'mores and catered meals. I love the idea of a fun glamping trip with my closest girlfriends so I've put together a few ideas for the girls-only glamping trip of my dreams.

Instead of cans of sodas, the ice chests will be filled with champs. These pink cans are so girly and cute, and sipping on champagne, even when you're "roughing it," is the fastest way to elevate any occasion.

I'm a firm believer that good food should be a part of any fun experience, so I'm not roasting any weinies on my glamping trip. I want to eat warm brie and fresh fruit, fire-grilled pizzettes, gourmet desserts, and of course s'mores.

I've never started a fire in my life, but I imagine it would be much easier with the help of these terribly adorable pinecone fire starters (so much more chic than the twisted paper towels or toilet paper rolls I've seen other people use).

We'll pass on the paper and styrofoam cups, thank you. Like true ladies of leisure, we'll take our coffee in the morning (and spiked hot chocolate at night) in real mugs, preferably dipped in gold or sparkling with glitter.

To make our dining table (i.e. the wooden benches provided by the campgrounds) look extra pretty, we'll pick wildflowers and place them in mason jars for a simple and rustic yet chic tablescape.

A restored vintage Airstream is the perfect place to chill out in the day and lay our heads at night.

(But I'm not at all opposed to this setup. I mean...)

Shop my favorite glamping essentials like faux fur throws, swanky coffee mugs, designer sunglasses and even a portable hot tub for the most epic and stylish glamping trip ever!

5 Favorite Books to Empower Kids

January 6, 2016

Reading to my little girls, or having my oldest daughter read a book to me is a big part of our daily routine--it's a sweet time to spend with my loves and something that we all look forward to each day. My daughters definitely have their favorites like Madeline and Fancy Nancy, which we recite several times a week (and no less!), but it's the books that have valuable life lessons for them that I treasure the most. These five books are favorites because they not only empower my children to express, love, and be proud of themselves, they also open the doors to discuss the crucial issues that all children will face at some point.

1. What Do You Do With An Idea? by Kobi Yamada and Mae Besom
Encouraging our kids to have independent thoughts and celebrate their ideas is incredibly important, but also very difficult once they start school. This book describes how one child goes from not quite knowing what to do with his idea, to letting it grow and blossom into something so magnificent he can't even contain it (despite some initial fears that people might laugh at it).

2. One by Kathryn Otoshi
This is one of my all-time favorites, and my six year old and I used to discuss it in great length before she even started school. It's a book about standing up to bullies--an all too important message these days--and how it only takes one brave person to do it. The imagery is clean and simple, and it beautifully depicts how that one courageous soul can change everything.

3. I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont
One of my greatest concerns about raising girls is that they will inevitably be subjected to images of other women that reflect societal beauty norms which are impossible to attain (hello, Photoshop!); it breaks my heart to think that they might ever feel inferior or inadequate. The tiny heroine of this rhyming book loves herself no matter what she looks like (even with a hypothetical snout that snorts or purple polka-dotted lips), and she won't let anyone, ever, make her feel that her physical appearance is all she has to offer.

4. I Think, I Am! by Louise Hay and Kristina Tracy
A book that teaches kids about positive affirmations can also teach grown-ups a thing or two. This book becomes interactive when you let your children read the affirmations on each page aloud. It's also a great way to open up conversation about some of the thoughts your little ones may be having, from learning to have patience when they have to wait for something they want, to much bigger issues like feeling unloved or lonely.

5. It's Okay To Make Mistakes by Todd Parr
I love this book because it reassures and reminds my girls, particularly my oldest, that everyone makes mistakes, and that it's okay. It teaches us that every mistake we make, no matter how big or embarrassing, is an opportunity to learn something, and knowing that makes it easier for my first grader to accept when she gets an answer wrong or has difficulty reading a particularly long word. And moms and dads, it's a good reminder for us as well!

Books I Want: My Reading Wishlist

October 14, 2015

I'm in avid reader, and while having two small children makes finishing a book within a reasonable amount of time a challenge, I haven't been deterred from one of my favorite pastimes (even if that means I can only read five pages at a time). And though I've got several books on my desk waiting for me to finish (including my girl crush Mindy Kaling's ridiculously funny Why Not Me? and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr), I'm always hungry for more. Here are a few reads that are currently on my must-get list.

That's What Fashion Is by Joe Zee
I'm a longtime fan of Joe Zee; it's hard to work in the fashion world and not admire this industry everyman. Besides being my BFF in my head, Zee is an amazing stylist and has impeccable taste, is honest without being mean (have you ever watched All On the Line with Joe Zee?), and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

All the Words Are Yours: Haiku On Love by Tyler Knott Greyson
I love the back story to this book; the author has written a haiku poem about love every day for the past six years and posted it online. This book is a collection of his favorites, including some unpublished works.

Kate Spade: All in Good Taste
As someone who loves to entertain, and loves the Kate Spade brand almost as much (it's so perfectly girly!), I was immediately intrigued when I got the email about preordering this baby, which is all about hosting and entertaining. Also, since I tend to judge books by their covers, that pretty pale pink with the obvious red wine stain had me at first click.

A book that has recipes, crafts, and "other homemade adventures"--I'm totally onboard! What could the other homemade adventures be, I wonder. My interest is officially piqued. Plus, I love the title.
